Runing an incredible 775 miles� along the west coast
of Mexico, the Baja California peninsula is famous for excellent wine,
pristine natural habitats, and some of the best diving in the world.
Here you can find Prehistoric cave paintings, immaculate beaches,
migratory whales, and tropical oases, that will make you never want to
leave from here.
Cabo Pulmo
Cabo
Pulmo National Park is located just 60 miles north of Baja’s tourism
epicenter, Los Cabos. This jewel of the East Cape region of Baja
California Sur stretches five miles from the northernmost tip, Pulmo
Point to the southernmost tip, Los Frailes.
Surrounded by undeveloped desert and a stunning mountain range, the
pristine beaches of Cabo Pulmo Park give way to a shallow bay that
cradles one of three living reefs (the only hard coral reef) in North
America, estimated to be around 20,000 years old, the reef is home to a
host of multicolored flora and fauna, a haven for naturalists and scuba
diving enthusiasts.
For many years, this precious place went unprotected, and through the
tenacious efforts of the Cabo Pulmo community, in 1995, the waters
offshore from Cabo Pulmo were designated a National Marine Park by the
Mexican government.
Rock Paintings of Sierra de San Francisco
The
Rock Paintings of Sierra de San Francisco is the name of the
prehistoric rock art pictographs found in the Sierra de San Francisco
mountain range in Mulegé Municipality of the northern region of Baja
California Sur state, in Mexico, another UNESCO world heritage site.
They are representations of what was once the life of the Cochimi or
Guachimis in the Baja California peninsula and were first discovered by
the jesuit Francisco Javier in the eighteenth century.
Often red but sometimes combined with black, the drawings depict
silhouetted images of animals, tools, humans and their rituals and are
about a thousand years old. The series of around 250 caves is located in
El Vizcaino bioreserve.
Isla Espíritu Santo
With
an extention of 19 km long and three km wide, Isla Espíritu Santo, or
Holy Spirit Island, is one of the many islands in the Sea of Cortez that
have been named UNESCO World Heritage Bioreserves.
It has dozens of beautiful bays, rich marine life, terrestrial
reptiles, birds and amphibians. This desert of more than nine thousand
hectares is one of the best preserved ecosystems in Baja California.
Also, Isla Espíritu Santo is the place for adventurers to go to swim
with frolicking sea lions, shoals of tropical fish, and to walk the
lengths of its many untouched beaches. The twelfth largest island of
Mexico, days can be spent exploring the biosphere on foot, by boat, or
by kayak.
Mulegé
The
oasis town of Mulegé is located approximately 493 kilometers north of
La Paz and 283 kilometers of Loreto, Baja California Sur, by the
transpeninsular highway.
A town situated at the foot of a river valley, it enjoys an unusual
abundance of fruit and vegetables for Baja California. The former
mission is worth walking to for the impressive views over the green
valley below.
From March to September, this site provide clear starry skies,
sometimes eclipsed only by the intense brightness of the moon. You also
can’t miss the sunset view of the horizon, when the lunar aurora lights
the Sea of Cortez.
You can go snorkeling, diving and even surf here. Due to the fishing
tradition in the region, one of the most popular activities among
tourists is sport fishing in the Santa Rosalia river. The old prison
which was constructed without bars and proper defences, also worth a
visit.
Balandra
Balandra is a coastal bay that includes a spectacular and beautiful mangrove forest and sandy beaches near the city of La Paz.
The bay, which looks out into the Sea of Cortez, is almost completely
circular and surrounded by sand dunes. The result of this natural
phenomenon is that the sea is even calmer here than in the rest of the
gulf, and you can delve up to 500 meters to contemplate the shades
between green and turquoise of the water and see the fish swimming
around you.
The seabed is a natural habitat for manta rays, which swim harmlessly away as you kick up sand on your crossing.
Thanks to it’s remote location, Balandra has pristine and
semi-virgins beaches, perfect to get away completely from the noise of
the modern world.
Laguna de San Ignacio
The
Laguna de San Ignacio is located 55 kilometers from the town of San
Ignacio and is part of the Whale Sanctuary of El Vizcaino, and one of
the only nurseries in the world for the gray whale.
This shrine holds a spectacular show during the first
months of the year, when hundreds of whales arrive to the lagoon to give
birth, jump and swim in the water.
Here you can go fishing, kayaking, diving, rent boats to
visit the various islands in the lagoon, hiking, do some mountain biking
and go on ATV tours.
El Mogote
Across
the bay from La Paz, lies the slim peninsula of Mogote. Filled with
mangroves, the spit is a perfect place to kayak through at sunrise or
sunset.
The bay around El Mogote is also a nursery for whale sharks, which
can be seen throughout the winter months, who come to this region to
breed. Hundreds of visitors have a chance to see up close and even swim
with these fish each year.
Evening walks along the deserted dunes give spectacular views of the
low mountain range around the Sea of Cortez and encircling La Paz.
Todos Santos
Founded
in the early 18th Century by missionaries, Todos Santos is a small town
on the pacific coast of Baja California Sur, with gorgeous pacific
beaches, a short drive away, and a burgeoning agricultural industry
that is fast becoming one of the most visited towns in all of Baja.
In recent years the town has become a focal point for arts and crafts
of the region, with many artists opening up galleries and making their
home there, also has been awarded the status of a Pueblo Mágico, a
magical town, by the Mexican government for its importance as a cultural
landmark.
La Ventana
La
Ventana is a small fishing village with a beautiful bay and strong
winter winds which draw kite-surf enthusiasts. Across the water lies
Isla Cerralvo, also known as Jacques Cousteau Island. The La Ventana is a
perfect place for anyone wishing to try their hand at snorkeling,
kayaking or diving.
Located on the Sea of Cortez just 35 minutes southeast of La Paz,
Baja California, Mexico. Recently declared a World Heritage Site by
UNESCO, the Sea of Cortez offers intense ocean-blue scenery and the
stark contrast of arid desert landscapes.
Wine Route In The Valle De Guadalupe
The
Valle de Guadalupe was founded, like so many places on the Baja
California peninsula, by missionaries. Spanish colonialists brought
vines over with them during the conquest, but after the surprise success
with which the vines grew, it was not long before the Spanish crown
banned production outright. Fortunately a sufficient number of
missionaries refused to acquiesce and regional wine production has been
maintained until this day. The valley and surrounding areas are home to a
series of wineries that can be visited for tastings.
Valle de Guadalupe has a wealth of wineries to explore – some 50+ and
growing! The range of wineries includes artisan wineries, boutique
wineries, and commercial wineries both large and small. Several of the
wineries you can conveniently pop into while traipsing around the valley
and others require a reservation. At many of the wineries you can visit
with the winemakers themselves, making it an especially memorable
experience.
The Ruta del Vino is on highway 3 only 40 kilometers from Ensenada
and 100km from Tijuana so it can be explored as a day trip from these
areas or you may wish to stay in any variety of hotels or RV parks in
the Guadalupe Valle area. There is also a secondary wine route located
near the small town of San Antonio de las Minas and exits at the town of
Francisco Zarco. This smaller additional wine route will take you by an
additional 10 wineries, restaurants, hotels, B&B’s and museums
along with many picturesque vineyards.
ARTESANIAS LITICAS DE SUDCALIFORNIA / ARTESANO CASIMIRO GARDEA OROZCO
La cultura de los pueblos que habitaron la
península siempre ha causado un gran interés para los antropólogos y
arqueólogos, también ha despertado el interés de la sociedad que busca
conocer y comprender el cómo vivían y concebían su espacio geográfico.
Gracias a los escritos de los misioneros
Jesuitas y Dominicos principalmente, nos ha llegado información acerca
de su modo de vestir, alimentación y algunas de sus costumbres, aunque
hay que señalar siempre con el sesgo característico de una cultura
totalmente diferente. Fue en los últimos dos siglos (1800-2000)
principalmente, cuando los investigaciones y reflexiones acerca de las
culturas indígenas que habitaron la península dieron como resultado un
mayor interés de la población por conocer y comprender de una manera más
objetiva, estas culturas que lograron con el paso de los siglos
adaptarse a un medio hostil.
Esta fascinación despertada ante el
hallazgo de algunas puntas de flecha en 1977 en sus paseos por las
cercanías de la ciudad de La Paz, especialmente durante sus caminatas
por la playa El Conchalito, hace ya más de 35 años motivo en Casimiro
Gardea Orozco, nacido en la Cd. de Chihuahua, Chih. Y avecindado en esta
ciudad desde 1975, siendo sobreviviente del Ciclón Liza en 1976, por
esta causa estando el internado en La ciudad de Los Niños y Niñas de La
Paz y siendo aprendiz de Diseñador Gráfico en la imprenta, adquirió la
costumbre de salir desde temprano los domingos a caminar por la playa . .
. durante estos paseos fue que encontró sus dos primeras puntas de
flecha completas de un tamaño aproximado a 4 pulgadas de largo en
perfecto estado, siendo que él no conocía este tipo de herramientas,
únicamente en el museo y en los libros, dichas puntas se las mostro a
una de las personas encargadas del internado que en unos de sus viajes a
Italia las llevo quedando estas en las manos de una persona que
trabajaba en uno de los museos de aquel país, de las cuales no volvió a
saber de ellas, a cambio esta persona a su regreso le obsequio un
cuchillo tallado de marfil que trajo de áfrica, a partir de ese entonces
nació en el la costumbre de cada vez que salía a caminar… buscar y
coleccionar piezas líticas, encontrando casi en su totalidad piezas
fraccionadas o quebradas y esporádicamente piezas completas, su
perseverancia le llevo a juntar más de 40 piezas completas en perfecto
estado las cuales dono en el 2012 al Museo de Antropología e Historia de
Baja California Sur para su exposición junto con un molar de camello
prehistórico que encontró frente al antiguo hotel Gran Baja.
Su labor creativa no concluyo con la
entrega de esta colección, sino que al darse cuenta de que la mayoría de
las puntas de lanza y flecha que se encontraba estaban partidas o
quebradas tal vez por el uso que se les dio al ser arrojadas contra sus
presas o a la hora de estar haciendo su percutido se le quebró al autor
original de las mismas y en base a artículos publicados en libros por
investigadores decidió realizar con la técnica de percutido algunas
puntas de flecha que después de muchos intentos logro sus primeras
replicas (por mencionarlas así pero en su caso son originales, por lo
regular ninguna pieza es igual a la otra) durante varios años estuvo
guardando estas piezas, no quedando satisfecho con esto empezó a
fabricar también hachas, después le nació la inquietud de hacerlas de
una manera más completa y comenzó a confeccionar arcos con sus flechas
haciendo los amarres con cordel de pesca, pero esto tampoco le
satisfacía y comenzó a investigar el tipo de amarres que los indios
californios usaban, leyendo el algún libro que ellos hacían lasillos
machando las raíz del cardón, choya, ocotillos y magueyes silvestres,
tratando de simular esta técnica intento buscar la manera de hacer algo
similar a los hallazgos en las excavaciones, incluso uso hoja de palma
pero no le parecía bien, hasta que en una charla en internet con un
coleccionista argentino este le dijo que en algunas culturas utilizaban
la fibra de la hoja del plátano para vendar las heridas y en algunos
caso los hilos de las hojas para hacer suturas craneales, que lo
intentara de esta manera, así lo hizo logrando lasillos muy parecidos a
los utilizados por los antiguos californios, confirmándolo después
cuando se le permitió la entrada al laboratorio del Museo de
Antropología e Historia de Baja California Sur para observar los
lasillos que ahí conservaban de un faldellín pericué hecho con
nudillos de carrizo de más de 700 años de antigüedad en cual se le
solicito les elaborara con esta técnica para colocar en un maniquí de
una mujer pericué junto con un pectoral de concha de madreperla para su compañero.
Ya logrado este paso comenzó confeccionar
arcos completos con su flechas haciendo sus amarres con esta fibra de
plátano poniendo mango a las hachas haciendo los amarres con esta fibra,
logrando de esta manera piezas que envidiaría cualquier coleccionista
de armas antiguas y así consiguió hacer su primera pequeña exposición
durante el mes de mayo al mes de agosto de 2013 en Centro de Artes
Tradiciones y Culturas Populares de Baja California sur.
Casimiro
Gardea Orozco presento esta serie de objetos con la finalidad de que
las personas obtengan una imagen de cómo eran utilizados y la
importancia que tenían para las culturas de los indígenas californios
dedicados principalmente a la caza y recolección de frutos y semillas.
Además esta piezas son concebidas por el autor como una artesanía
diferente tal vez, pero no menos importante al ser hechos con enorme
destreza y habilidad..
Reconocemos la constante labor de este
artesano que nos ofrece una interesante visión de la cultura de los
antiguos californios, esperando que hayan disfrutado de esta muestra del
talento y creativad de este Sudcaliforniano por adopción.
